5 Lessons on Ancestor Work from Pixar's Coco

I watched Coco around the time it was released last year, and I am still shook. I didn't really have a frame of reference as to what the movie was about, and I was floored at how powerful the message about Egun or ancestors that was presented. The second time I watched it, I cried harder than I did the first time.

Yes, this post will have spoilers and yes, it’s good. It's heart-warming, it's beautifully done, it's important. And it's on Netflix. Go watch Coco. Now.

I won't spend much talking about everything I love about this movie - from the intricacies of the accurate guitar fingering or the nod to the story of Orpheus. Rather, I want to focus on some of the important lessons about ancestral work that were reinforced in the movie Coco.

Ancestor Work & Your Root Chakra

As a black American, I find myself spending a lot of time working on my root chakra.

The root chakra or mūlādhāra (in Sanskrit) literally translates to root support, and is found at the seat of the spine. The root chakra is the foundation of the energetic body. The root chakra is associated with identity, physicality, grounding, and safety. The root chakra is also directly connected to our ancestral lineage. This is why root chakra work is an essential practice to anyone who identifies as a Black American.

A word on living.

I sometimes get lost thinking of the times I’ve spent not living. Life is meant for living.

You can’t ignore life. Don’t get so stuck in your dreams that you forget to explore life. Life is meant to be lived.
